Girl 1: "Oh, hey. American Psycho. I can't remember if it's American Psycho 1 or American Psycho 2 that I liked..."

(I actually stop what I'm doing because I can't wrap my head around the dilemma.)

Girl 2: "American Psycho 2 was the one with Mila Kunis."

Girl 1: "Yeah. That's the one I liked."

Girl 2: "Oh. It was *so* good."

(Insert sound of me banging my head repeatedly off the desk)

Good old Thursday

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 AM

I'm primed to settle into something that resembles a normal routine. Primarily bookstore time, but with a little stage management on the side. In my free time there are books to read, movies to see, and things that resemble friends and dates to spend time with in social settings. Hopefully, this will mean more posting.

Of course, I haven't exactly settled into this nice routine, but it's coming, and I can't wait.

On the bookshop front, my boss *finally* hired someone else. She's coming in around noon and I get to train her. I wish she wasn't coming in a the absolute busiest time of day... plus, I have *no* idea how to train someone...... it will be fine. I guess today I'll concentrate on showing her how to do things at the front? What I'd love to do is draft her up some sort of map (in the manner of Eric Anderson's work for The Royal Tenenbaums, of course) of the store, detailing where things are. That's kind of the hard part. Knowing where everything is, or at least where it might be.

What it all comes down to is: we are both going to be trying to make a good first impression. :)

In other news, cheap pitchers at Mongolian (on an empty stomach) last night. I haven't decided if that was brilliant or silly. Ask me tomorrow how I survived today.

The good folks at Fabulist have been kind enough to allow us common folk to stream the new Sigur Ros album (which I think you can do on their site, but anyways.......)

I know that I've been harping on this new album, but I'm pretty stoked about it. So far, I'm loving what I hear. It's got a fire and a life to it that keeps it worth listening to.

Holy awesome crap!

Totally out of the blue, Sigur Ros has released their new single and (NSFW) video.

The song is called Gobbledigood and it makes me stupidly excited for their new album: Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust (With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly). Seriously.

Adding to the auditory excitement is how totally righteous the music video is! It was directed by Arni & Kinski, and inspired by Ryan McGinley who seems to have also collaborated on the video. In classic McGinley fashion, features a bunch of hot, young things running around naked in the woods. I think McGinley's aesthetic, combined with the song it’s particularly amazing, definitely pretty fun and out there.

If you’re at work, you probably shouldn’t watch it, as it's full of naughty bits *everywhere*. Of course, it would be the coolest thing ever if you snuck a peak at the video while your boss/co-workers backs were turned.

I just realized that I have no idea when I work this afternoon. The funny thing is, the June schedule was actually made before the start of this month, I just haven't looked at it yet.

That's what I get for working at work so much lately.

In other news, call backs (for the Hamilton Fringe show I'm stage managing) are tonight. I'm pretty pumped. It will be a nice couple hours of work that don't feel so much like work. I'm pretty pleased to say that everyone I know got call backs, although some of them will be competing against each other. I have mixed feelings about pretty much everyone that's being called back. But, those mixed feelings are pretty much going to equal a win-win situation for the cast.

Not just another Saturday...

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 11:38 AM

I just paid out almost $200 for a collection of books. I'm pretty sure that's the most I've personally paid out to a customer... ever. Well, for books at least. Sometimes DVDs make fat cash.

I spent *hours* last night and this morning sorting through the collection, checking for duplicates, looking up prices online. It was definitely a prime collection of books this guy had and, if anything, I might have underpaid him slightly... but it's a little ridiculous to be paying out such a large sum of money before noon. Especially since I haven't really done any sales yet.

It's one of those weird work feeling, where I *know* I did the right thing, but it just feels kind of wrong.

Little help? (Please.)

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 4:54 PM

Monday, after work, I have a meeting scheduled to meet and greet the people I'm stage managing a show for later this summer.

I've been asked to provide a meeting place downtown.

Normally, I'd just go to Matter of Taste, but they close at 6pm on Monday, which is when I get off work.

Anyone have any suggestions? (Please.)

Today's QC hits a little too close to home.

In a HILARIOUS WAY!!!

By noon today, I had been to class (and gotten chastised for knitting in class), bought yarn (for specific things), and took the long bike route home.

I'm having a serious love/hate thing with the new "responsible and organized" Miranda.

I'm working very hard to settle into my impossible schedule for the next two months... possibly four. (I'll explain another time, hopefully.)

Today is a day that I don't have to be anywhere before mid-afternoon. So far, I've done some pleasure reading, gone for something resembling a run, made delicious food. Like, *seriously* delicious. I also made enough food to last for the rest of today, which is just practical.

Before I head into work, I have ambitious plans to shower, do some dishes, put some clothes away, and get everything organized to get me through work followed by rehearsal. That way I can leave the house and not worry about anything until I get back fairly late tonight.

Oh, and maybe send an e-mail or two. I'm a little backed up on those.

Not really a review

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 3:48 PM

I went to see Iron Man last night. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find *anyone* to go see it with. I didn't go alone, but I did go with people who had absolutely no idea who Iron Man is.

Iron Man isn't my favourite man from the comics. After last year's Civil War series, and Tony Stark's roll in the whole thing, I wiped my hands of Marvel altogether... mostly. I realized this as I was settling into to watch the movie, and chose to wipe those pre-conceived notions from my head. I was *excited* to see this movie, and I wasn't going to let Civil War ruin that for me.

I won't go into details (since I'm at work) about my experience seeing the film, but I *loved* it. In my humble opinion, it just might be the best super-hero film ever made. Talent, story (including backstory and mythology), technology... it was all well played.

I kind of want to see it again.

After we left the movie, one of my companions gave the criticism that they didn't find the film to be realistic enough. I didn't say anything on that then (other than "well, it *is* based on a comic book...") and I won't say anything more about it now.

Strange things are going on...

  • Apr. 17th, 2008 at 10:16 AM

It's only just past 10am, but so far today I've:

- woken up at a reasonable hour (one might call it "early")
- read a one-act play
- done some (light) yoga
- gone for something resembling a half-hour run
- completed all of my internet communication that was waiting for me

Now, I'm sitting here with a big thermos of green tea and a bowl of leftovers... leftover (spinach/tempeh/chickpea/israeli couscous/bragg) healthy deliciousness.

I'm confused... shouldn't I still be asleep? I don't have any appointments until 1pm.

Did I wake up and become an adult?

And yet, I've never learned...

This one particular comic sums up everything I feel about theatre. Not all the time, but often. Quite often. Well, often enough to consider leaving it all behind.

How *not* to solicit for donations

  • Apr. 15th, 2008 at 7:23 PM

I'm just hanging out at home, reading comics and listening to The Hold Steady (don't judge me), when there's a knock at my door. I go to answer it, and there's a guy with a binder of information...

Guy: Hello. Is your mum or dad home?
Me: Yeah... this is my place...

He gave me his spiel on the Sobriety Centre and apologized profusely for assuming that I was... much younger than I am, I guess. Then I sent him on his way, without donation, but taking a information flyer from him (my standard protocol for solicitors). I mean, I'm wearing a trench coat and a pashmina... does that scream 'minor' to you?

At work...

  • Apr. 12th, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Oh, how my regulars entertain me. Dave, who is autistic, came in to exchange a vhs that didn't work. Explaining the concept of a store-credit note turned out to be quite trying. He finally understood, took the note, then immediately found merch to use up the note with. Defeating the purpose of writing the credit slip...

As I'm putting his purchases in a bag, Dave slips into his regular banter with me. About how he's known me for a very long time and that I'm turning twenty-five this year. Actually, he whispered that part, which is pretty funny. At this point, I notice another regular (who's name I don't know) listening and laughing in the background.

Dave keeps talking (and talking and talking) and switches to asking me ethical questions about whether or not it's polite to phone somebody he's met, but doesn't know very well. Turns out, he met a nurse in the States and has been (probably politely) calling her at home and work, just to talk. So this lady's husband politely called Dave and told him to stop calling. Then Dave politely called him back to thank him for being so polite. Then a detective from the hospital this woman works at called him.............

I told him that it wouldn't be polite for him to call her when her husband so politely told him to stop calling. Because then he could get into all kinds of trouble and lose his phone privileges, etc. Basically, I was just standing there in wide-eyed amusement, trying to suppress a crooked little grin.

Anyways, after Dave leaves, the other regular who had been eavesdropping starts chatting me up as she pays. She mentions that it reminds her of the time he was involved with a married man... knowingly... Jeh.

Apparently, it's "Air Your Marital Infidelities Day" at Casablanca! And to think, I though it was going to be super slow and boring with the crap weather outside. Of course, the Scientology protesters are out in hordes... progressively getting more annoying with each passing weekend. Although, I have to admit, it amuses me everytime a customer asks what they're up to out there. Way to be effective guys.

Rent a Grandma

  • Mar. 21st, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Are you lacking a crafty granny? Or are just tired of expecting me to knit you something? Borrow a knitter from netgranny.ch, a Swiss service that allows users to commission hand-knit wearables from little old ladies.

Choose an item to be knit, size and colour preference, then pick your knitter of choice.

A seriously good idea.
